What you should know about pixels and rems

How many Rems are in a Pixel?

If base = 16 px

1 px = 0.0625 rem

Pixel definition provided by Dictionary.com

A pixel is the smallest element of an image that can be individually processed in a video display system.

Rem definition provided by Snook.ca

The em unit is relative to the font-size of the parent, which causes the compounding issue. The rem unit is relative to the root—or the html—element. That means that we can define a single font size on the html element and define all rem units to be a percentage of that.

Legend:

  • px – Pixels
  • rem – Rems

Great tool, thank you. But if the ‘tell your friends’ popup came after a calculation I’d be more likely to do that.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will disable the popup for the moment.

MDN has a better definition of “pixel” as the term relates to CSS and web development: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/CSS_pixel

This tool is awesome. I didn’t think I’d find one like it when I ran a search in DuckDuckGo. Thank-you! I’m certain I’ll be using it often. You can expect a donation if that’s possible. When I’m able, I’ll write to ask. Again, I sincerely thank-you.

    Hello,
when you convert to rem the ‘rem’ keyword is added after a space, like 0.125 rem, which then in scss watcher is shown as an error. It should be 0.125rem, without space.

Adding a space in the result (such as 1.25 rem) is not very ninja-like. Because it won’t work if i paste it in my code like this. You also do it in the cyan decription box, but in practice it’s not written like this. Is it because you think it looks nicer? :)
Apart from this it’s a nice little tool.

Thank you for your comment. I have removed the space between the value and the unit.
About the cyan box… It’s a design choice, that I thought it goes along with the palette of colours. Do you have any suggestions?
