How many pounds in a quart?

There are 4 quarts in a gallon, and a gallon weighs 8.34 pounds, so a quart weighs 2.085 pounds.

How to determine the weight of a quart of water

We know that a quart is equal to ¼ gallons. We also know that a gallon is 8.34 pounds. Hence, 1 quart is 8.34 / 4 pounds; this means that 1 quart equals 2.085 pounds.

Weight of the water depends on the density. Water has different density depending on the temperature. Hence quart is a unit of volume and pound is a unit of weight, the conversion rate varies based on the water temperature. The calculation above is valid for a water temperature of 62 °F (17 °C).

Conversion formula

pounds = quarts * 2.085

To find out the weight in pounds, multiply the volume in quarts by the conversion ratio 2.085.

Example

Here’s how to convert 5 quarts to pounds using the formula above.

5 quarts = 5 * 2.085 = 10.425 pounds

What is a quart

The US liquid quart is a unit of volume equal to one quarter of a gallon, 2 pints, 4 cups, or 32 fluid ounces. The term comes from the Latin “quartus”, which means one-quarter. There are three kinds of quarts currently in use: liquid quart and dry quart (US), and the imperial quart (UK). You should not confuse these three units between them.

What is a pound

A pound is a unit of weight equal to 16 ounces or 7000 grains. The pound is equal to exactly 0.45359237 kg. Pounds are usually abbreviated as “lb”, but “lbs”, “lbm” symbols are often used. The unit descends from the Latin “lībra pondō”, which means “the weight measured in libra”. Hence the name “pound” and the abbreviation “lb”.
